Step-by-Step Application Timeline
Follow these steps in order to complete your EU Blue Card application.
Valid Passport
Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages.
Biometric Passport Photos
2 recent biometric photos (35 × 45 mm, neutral expression, light grey/white background).
University Degree (recognised in Germany)
Degree recognised by anabin database or assessed by KMK/ZAB. Must be equivalent to a German university degree.
Tip: Check your degree on anabin.kmk.org before applying. If not listed, request a ZAB equivalence assessment (takes 2–3 months).
Employment Contract or Binding Job Offer
Signed contract with a German employer. Minimum salary: €45,300/year (or €41,041.80 for shortage occupations like IT, engineering, medicine).
Tip: If your salary is between €41,042 and €45,300, your occupation must be on the Federal Employment Agency's shortage list.
Health Insurance
Proof of health insurance coverage valid from your arrival date in Germany.
Tip: Most employers enroll you in statutory health insurance (GKV) automatically. Bring travel insurance to cover the gap until enrollment.
Completed Visa Application Form
Signed national visa application form (Antrag auf Erteilung eines nationalen Visums).
CV / Resume
Up-to-date CV in English or German showing your education and professional experience.
Tip: Use a standard European CV format (Europass). Include exact dates and job titles.
